The Characteristics of Effective Surgical Technicians: Competence

The role of surgical technicians is very important when it comes to preparing patients and operating theaters prior to surgery. Actual tasks that they are required to do vary from one hospital to another, ranging from helping with the sterilization of instruments to transferring patients and records to the wards post operatively. However, no matter what other duties are assigned, one of their main tasks is to prepare operating theaters prior to surgery and to help maintain cleanliness during an operation.

It is imperative that operating rooms and all instruments are completely sterile before an operation begins. Sterilizing an operating theater requires more than just basic cleaning; special attention must be given to all areas, furniture and items that are in the theater. While a surgical technician may not do all the cleaning physically themselves, they will be required to supervise staff members as they do their job. They must also see that a sterile environment is maintained as much as possible during the course of an operation and as such they must be very much aware of what is going on in the entire room at all times during the procedure. They cannot have a momentary lapse of concentration nor should they accept anything sub-standard when it comes to maintaining the cleanliness during an operation. 

It is not a job to be taken lightly as people's lives are at stake and serious illness or infection could develop if the standard for cleanliness was not upheld. Therefore it is vitally important that anyone taking on this profession be extremely competent and well trained in all aspects of the position. 

Another important role that many surgical technicians play is that of maintaining and caring for equipment used during surgery. Again, a high level of competence is required as the surgeons and those assisting in the operation must have confidence that the equipment they use is both sterile and in optimum working condition. Considering the amount of importance attached to the tasks the surgical technician must attend to, it is extremely important that they are skilled and highly proficient at their job.
